The Art of Hygge | Being Warm & Cosy

We’re a nation currently obsessed with minimalist scandi design. So it’s hardly surprising that the word of the moment comes from Denmark, hygge. It’s all to do with creating a warm, comfortable atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people around you.

As I sit here writing, I’m trying to create a bit of hygge. It’s dusk, so I’ve lit some candles and have cuddled up under a wool blanket on the sofa with a grisly Laurie who’s just had his injections. The temperature’s dropped so we’re both snuggly in woolly jumpers. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll have seen pictures of our recent family holiday where I lived in this jumper. It’s from Deborah Campbell Atelier a British made, luxury, ethical label. She specialises in turning waste into fashion, as many of her garments are in a fabric made from recycled bottles. Made from 100% wool this Ren Chunky Aran Sweater is possibly the warmest and most cuddly item in my wardrobe.

Now I know real wool is often contentious, it can be scratchy, gets moth-eaten and is more expensive to buy than an acrylic version. However when I’m shopping for knitwear I always opt for a garment with a high wool content, and here’s why:

Wool Lasts. Acrylic jumpers look dog-eared within months, whereas a well cared for wool garment holds its shape and stitch. So this will be a jumper I’ll pull out of my wardrobe year after year.

Wool garments look nicer. As you can see from the photos the cable stitch looks beautiful and defined, this is because the yarn has substance. You could copy the entire garment in an acrylic/nylon mix and you’d never achieve the same look. Believe me, as an ex knitwear buyer for New Look I’ve tried!

Wool is a wonderful warm fibre. It’s completely natural, sustainable and recyclable. Plus it’s very warm. It is also a very versatile; I recently visited a BnB where all the interiors were decorated with wool. To read the blog post please click here.

How to Wear a Wool Knit?

A cream cable knit jumper is a classic wardrobe staple. But, that doesn’t mean it has to be styled just with jeans. It’s an incredibly versatile piece. The most obvious way to wear it is casually. On holiday I wore it with my jeans and over my dungarees, feel free to visit my Instagram page to see more styling options.

However you could also style it in a cool urban way, think leather skirt or culottes with trainers and a navy pea coat. Come summer it’ll have its use worn with shorts on a cool evening, I’m thinking a bbq on the beach with a bottle of beer. Surely that’s the spirit of hygge.

Real wool doesn’t have the polluting effect of plastic microfibres shed from fleeces and other synthetic fabrics when washed.
