Cannon Balls

Remember, remember the fifth of November,

Gunpowder treason and plot,

We see no reason

Why gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot!

Whilst I’m not really a Halloween fan, Firework Night is a different matter entirely. There is something truly magical about coloured sparks flying through the air, that sulphurous smell and hot dogs with onions. Though I have to confess I prefer a home grown, pyromania version to a grandiose show to music. Seeing the Catherine wheel fly off the fence post into the neighbour’s garden and a rocket exploding slightly too close to the house is just so much more exhilarating.

Firework night has always been an important date for my family, primarily because my Uncle is so fire obsessed. All the cousins, aunts and uncles would get together for super, followed by a firework show and a ceremonial Guy Fawkes burning. As we got older there was less hiding in doors fearful of the bangs and more discussion over how much money had been spent this year on fireworks and would my Auntie find out? My mum used to make us these super simple, super yummy treats, appropriately named Cannon Balls. If you are wheat or gluten free, these are perfect for you.canon balls 2-2canon balls-4canon balls-2
