How to Make Clothes Look Good For Longer

Let’s face it how often do you take a trip to the shops? Wander round browsing, trying outfits on? Since Daisy’s birth there hasn’t been one shopping trip that hasn’t been a frantic in, out. And even internet shopping is done on the sly, hoping my phone won’t be grabbed by a two year old. So wouldn’t it be great if our clothes lasted, looked ‘on trend’ for longer and we didn’t have to constantly replenish our wardrobes? Oh hang on a sec, we don’t. It’s just when we do buy we just have to be savvy about what to purchase.

Buy good quality

One of the most obvious ways of ensuring our clothing lasts, is to buy better quality. As an ex fashion buyer, I know that, unfortunately, price doesn’t always = quality. But even the untrained consumer can usually tell the quality of something by the feel of the fabric. Papu Stories have just launched their SS17 collection, and one thing I love about their product (there are many!) is the weight of their GOTS-certified organic cotton. It has substance and, with 5% elastane, it washes well and keeps its shape.

Buy good style

One sure way of ensuring clothes don’t end up in land fill / the local charity shop is to buy clothes you really love. Don’t buy something because it’s the latest fad or because it was in the sale and only cost £10. Buy clothes that suit you and are stylish. These are the items you will look pull out of the wardrobe year after year. I really love this Papu Stories Dot dress, I adore the non print, in a monochrome colour palate and it’s in a shape I know works for me. With a relaxed body, it hides any lumps and bumps. But the tight sleeves ensure I don’t look like I’m wearing a sack. It’s one of those really easy everyday dresses, that works equally well running after the kids as sipping Prosecco with my friends. I can dream!

Buy versatile Clothes

Think about how many ways you can wear an item. My dress is trans seasonal. This summer I’ll be wearing it bare-legged with trainers. But come winter, it’ll be worn with tights and a pair of boots. You can often easily update a look by changing the accessories you wear with it. Papu have put rollable cuffs on trousers and sleeves so clothes fit kids longer. Laurie’s Hi Hay trousers and Stripe hoodie are size 6-12 months and fit him really well now. That said, I am confident they will still fit him when he turns 1.

Buy clothes to pass down

All of Papu’s prints are completely unisex, which makes passing clothes down a breeze. But, unisex dressing doesn’t all have to be all about monochrome dressing. It’s taking an item that would work well on both a boy & girl, and styling it in a way that suits them. Daisy wears her Cloudy Dream T Shirt with her tutu skirt as well as with jeans, and it would also work well with Papu’s bright yellow leggings. But in two years time Laurie will look equally good in this T with his own trousers.

One thing I’m really enjoying about The Curated Closet book I told you I was reading are the tricks for spotting quality clothes even in the less expensive stores.

    I adore that dress. x

When it comes to buying clothes I am a tactile shopper, for me it starts with the feel of clothing and if it feels too thin or rubbish fabric then it’s a no-go regardless of style. I would however love to look stylish but I’m still working on it 😉

I think the feel of clothing is a good place to start Sabina, you are right if the fabric is thin or feels horrible then you’ll never wear the garment. I think being stylish is about being comfortable in our own skin and the clothes we wear, and that is a process for everyone! xxx
