The 1 Thing You Should Spend Money On….

Papu-3

I have a dear, wise friend. So wise in fact that on Daisy’s second birthday she gave me a present 😉, a book called Style Forever, by Alyson Walsh. The basic premise is that we can’t all look like twenty something models, and we don’t all have the clothing budget of Victoria Beckham. So what should we spend our money on?

I won’t give away too many of her secret’s, but there is a reference to paying for a good haircut. When you’re freelance (that really means living off Dr. Husband’s salary), and have 1½ children, it’s amazing how looking after oneself can fall to the bottom of the list. Good haircuts aren’t cheap, but it is the one item of clothing you wear every single day. So last week I took this advice to heart, and made it a priority to get my hair done pre Twiglet’s arrival.

Now the thing with a good haircut is that when it grows, it keeps its shape. So actually you don’t have to go as often. Now the same is true for good quality clothing, it’s not rocket science, the nicer the quality the longer it lasts. One fabric I’ve found this really important with is cotton. 100% cotton comes in all different weights. Generally if you want to buy an item that won’t be see through or go out of shape you need to opt for a heavier weight of cotton. Weight isn’t the only factor that determines quality though, as it is also down to how it is processed.

At #37weekspregnant, I’m sporting a new haircut 😊 and wearing the Kantro Dress and stripe leggings from Finish sustainable fashion brand, Papu. They are predominantly a childrenswear brand but do a few of their styles in mummy sizes. All their products are made from 100% organic cotton, in a good weight with a really soft handle. These are garments that are made to last, #lessismore. This is important because, “it takes 2720 litres of water to make a t-shirt, that’s how much we normally drink over a 3 year period.”* Cotton is often produced in countries where clean water is not plentiful. So like that good haircut when purchasing cotton we need to be really mindful of what we are buying. We want to be buying 1 item that will last, and not 10 cheaper products that won’t.

The dress and leggings I am wearing aren’t specifically maternity, they just are cut in a way that allows for my bump. Amazingly, they are still very comfortable to wear, and I love that I can wear them post baby too.
