Wardrobe Tricks | Denim Culottes

I’d thought I’d give you all a break from endless pictures of me with a bump. Here’s the first of three blog posts that I wrote styling a pair of Laura Ashley denim culottes in different ways.

There is something very satisfying about having a capsule wardrobe, filled with timeless trusty items to be worn again and again. That said, I’m always on the look out for a new fashion item that fulfils the role of a wardrobe staple. These denim culottes from Laura Ashley do just that. Lightweight with a slight flare to the leg, they are made of a gorgeously soft tencel fabric, which is great for this beautiful weather we’re having.

Today I’ve opted to keep my outfit simple – the minimal approach to dressing. Each item in itself is a wardrobe staple. I’m particularly fond of this Sleeveless Waterfall Trench Coat. It’s a key fashion piece and also a great layering item. I’ve worn it with an easy collarless blouse for a relaxed look. But, it would look equally great over a Breton stripe top, or (dare I suggest) a polo neck when the days start to get cooler. Apologies, I shouldn’t tempt our British weather!

I’ve gone for a casual, off duty look, hence the collarless blouse with turn up cuffs rather than a more formal version; although the chain strap cross body bag slightly smartens up the outfit. I love the clean box shape and the cream colour with a pretty gold chain. It’s big enough for essentials but not so big that I fill it with unnecessary items that weigh my shoulder down. So easily done. I can see myself using it for a summer party or wedding later on this year. I’ve added the wooden bracelets to complete the ensemble, and I particularly like the blue thread detail on them.

This dichotomy of casual and smart is essential because, as a mum, I’m forever performing a juggling act. Aren’t we all? One moment I’m running around after my daughter at the park, the next I’m at a business meeting or negotiating a deal. Unsurprisingly, there’s rarely a moment to change my outfit so this hybrid of a casual and smart look is, for me, imperative.
