Rust | The New Neutral

Neutrals, neutrals, neutrals. Clothing in neutral colours are the bedrock of any wardrobe. I adore them as they’re easy to style, so no need to be too creative each morning. As most of my clothes work together, it makes throwing on an outfit effortless: which is essential when you’re dressing a toddler and a newborn as well. They’re also worth investing in as they return each season, and so are often those well-loved items that get worn time and again. Forever pieces. When I’m buying a garment I look for good quality, in a shape that suits me; one’s wardrobe staples should be more about personal style than the latest fad.

So discovering a new neutral colour really makes me smile. This autumn Laura Ashley has launched a beautiful rust colour, which has become a surprise addition to my wardrobe. I’ve chosen it in this drape front coat as it works so well with navy. The coat itself is made from 100% wool, so not only is it good quality but it’ll also help keep me toasty and warm this winter. I particularly like the raw edge seams and drape collar, turning a formal style into an item that is much more versatile. Dress it up with heels and a skirt or dress it down with jeans and trainers. It has the added benefit of being midi length making it long enough to wear over cardigans. Big tick.

I’ve chosen to wear it with my favourite ripped jeans, a navy Tee and a pair of nude heels. These are items I’ve had in my wardrobe for years, but the addition of this rust coat has given them a new lease of life. I’m thinking of playing more with the combination of nude and rust because it’s not an obvious colour mix, so would give an entirely new spin on my wardrobe. Fun. As a mum of two, heels aren’t always practical (!) But, every so often I pop them on as they always give me a little boost: a bit like the effect of wearing red lipstick.
