The Unwritten (until now) Rules of Mother’s Day

n4mummy holds a bouquet of mother's day flowers from Appleyard London, sustainable Mother's Day giftsSince becoming a mum, I’ve become a huge fan of Mother’s Day. Yes, this is the one day of the year we get to be spoiled, pampered and generally fussed over. I can’t wait! But I thought it would be good to lay down some Mother’s Day rules, just to make sure the men in our lives are clear exactly what is expected! And also to give some suggestions for sustainable Mother’s Day gifts. So, this is probably a blog post to unsubtly forward to your husband/partner.

With further ado, here are the unwritten rules of Mother’s Day, with a few sustainable Mother’s Day gifts thrown in:

1.Mothers need a lie in

Let’s face it, until our children become teenagers they will be up at 7am (or before.) So, on March 31st, fathers you need to leap out of bed at the first squeak of a child’s voice and whisk them to a far away part of the house.  We need to make sure we have an eye mask and ear plugs to hand, to make sure we are not disturbed. And if we want some fab pjs for the grand lie in, then Yawn’s are extremely comfy, durable and pretty. Plus for 20% off use code YAWNN4MUMMY20 (valid until 31st March). Yawn’s pj’s are made from 100% cotton with 284 threads per square inch, far greater than the standard 150. This makes the pjs super soft, longer lasting and with less piling, so a great sustainable Mother’s Day gift. As a company they are currently looking into using organic cotton for their nightwear.

2.Mothers shall not cook

In this metrosexual age, many men are adept cooks and happily knock up brunch or even a three-course dinner party. Sadly, that is not my reality. So, for rule number 2 to work there may be some assistance required. If you’re London based, then Islington’s neighbourhood bar, Little Bat, is offering a free brunch meal and cocktail to all mums dining with their children on Mother’s Day. We were lucky enough to try it out this weekend and had a wonderful time. We started the meal with roasted cauliflower and smoked cheddar croquettes with a chilli relish. I then had avocado, dukkah, poached eggs and toasted sourdough which was divine. All washed down with a glass of Belsazar Rose and Tonic, heavenly! Daisy & Laurie were more than happy with their smoked salmon on toast to start and strawberry pancakes for pudding. It was really child friendly and lovely to be in an adult setting for once. Do try it out.

3.Mothers need to be pampered

It’s amazing how your expectations change. Pre children I thought pampering was a day at a spa. Now, a bath or shower on my own is unprecedented luxury. Recently I discovered two gorgeous new pampering products which would make perfect sustainable Mother’s Day gifts.  Firstly, Mooke’s handmade face balm, that I bought myself from the Hackney Made Collective. With Sweet Almond Oil, Argan extract, Essential oils, Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter it is a feast for your skin. And at £13.50 for 50ml it is very good value for a clean beauty product. It also comes in a nice tin, so no plastic.

Secondly these beautiful bath salts from Hopscotch London, which are just so pretty. Handmade here in London they contain mineral rich dead sea salts and epsom salts to cleanse, hydrate and relieve any aches and pains. They are scented with essential oils and finished with dried flowers. The ones you see here I made at a recent Etsy workshop with Hopscotch London. But they can be bought on Etsy for £22.

4.Mothers need to be made/bought a gift

There is nothing like a gift to show someone just how much you appreciate them. So, Mother’s Day is no exception. Whether it be a picture your child has drawn specially, a bunch of flowers, or brunch out, it doesn’t matter. Men – just make sure your children have something to give their mum on Mother’s Day. And if you want to buy flowers don’t forget you can get 20% off with Appleyard London with code N4MUMMY

If you’re after something really special then head to Merci Maman, who have a personalised jewellery service in their workshop in London. You can opt to have whatever you’d like written on a series of necklaces or bracelets. I chose to have Daisy & Laurie’s name put on one pendent and J&K (my husband & I) on the other. Prices from £39.

Now, I’m someone who adores home fragrance, as they cover up a whole multitude of child related smells! Recently I discovered Auli London. They offer fresh botanical room fragrances in different guises; candles, diffusers and room-sprays. All their products are completely natural and come from sustainable sources. And their packaging is FSC certified and chlorine free. Also, they smell divine. I particularly love Leur D’Encens where Cedarwood and Vetiver mix with Frankincense and Rose, but they all smell beautiful. Prices from £34.
