Trend is a slippery customer, forever changing it’s mind, coming and going, never for a moment standing still. Yet, it is such a powerful concept that if you took an outfit you could hazard a guess at its decade and origin. This AW is no exception, and, at London Fashion Weekend, VeryExclusive.co.uk put together a catwalk of the 4 key themes to help us navigate our way through this year’s trends. Let us take a peak:

Into the Wild

Animal print has become such a staple in our wardrobes that it’s almost its own colour. Yet what is new is the variety of prints. Traditional leopard is still key, but so is snake, cheetah and zebra. These prints can be worn head to toe as a dress or jumpsuit, or as a feature bag, shoe or coat with a monochrome outfit. Look out for statement accessories that are wonderfully textured using leather, pony skin and faux fur.

Marsala Tones

This boosy Sicilian fortified wine was the inspiration for the vast array of red tones gracing the catwalks this season from designers such as IRO, Joseph and Kenzo. From deep burgundy through to true red and paprika, there is a shade to suit every skin tone. Wear back with washed denim for an easy casual look, or as a pop of colour with black or grey to brighten up that winter outfit. If you want to stand out from the crowd at a party, then wear it head to toe. But if subtlety is more your thing, these colours look fantastic in accessories, shoes, bags and hats.

Super Retro

Have you braved buying a pair of flares yet? Well, the 70’s trend isn’t going away. As fashion correspondent Antonia O’Brien pointed out, “flares are incredibly flattering on a women’s figure, balancing out and elongating our legs.” If flares aren’t for you, there are a whole host of other ways to embrace retro from designers such as See by Chole, Just Cavali and DKNY. Try psychedelic and graphic floral prints. Wear a hero piece such as a pleated midi or wide brimmed hat with a simple turtle neck. Or add texture to your outfit with fringed accessories or a floaty dress.

Debbie Harry eat your heart out, this is a trend to release the wild child within. Unsurprisingly the key designers for this look are Vivienne Westwood Anglomania, House of Holland and MCQ Alexander McQueen. Hardwear is key, so keep an eye out for chunky zips, studding and even safety pins. Checks have been reinvented; the classic check shirt is replaced with a playsuit or even tailored into a dress. Leather and glossy PU come in every guise: trousers, skirts and dresses to name a few. This look is transferable for all occasions, with cutwork lace and asymmetric hems dominating evening wear looks.

Daisy Lowe says*, “I’ve always been a firm believer in dressing for yourself and not what’s on trend. Rather than thinking about what we’re supposed to do, it’s about looking at clothes and seeing how they can work for you.” So with that in mind, use these 4 keys trends as inspiration, to help curate your very own AW15 wardrobe.

Why are animal prints so popular when most of us want to preserve animals and certainly don’t want real animal skins/furs?
