Where To Buy Stylish Ethical Maternity Clothes

Looking good whilst pregnant can be challenging. Looking good whilst pregnant and wearing ethical maternity clothes has at times felt an impossibility. But at 36 weeks, on my third pregnancy, I now feel qualified to introduce you to five ethical maternity brands that will make your bump look great.

Now, I appreciate that buying new maternity clothes isn’t the most sustainable option. During all my pregnancies I’ve adapted my current clothes and worn second hand items, but that is another blog post. Despite this, there have always been items I’ve needed to buy new. So, here’s my definitive guide to ethical maternity clothes:

Boob

Appropriately named, Boob is a Swedish brand that makes stylish, comfortable, ethical maternity clothing. Think Scandi minimalism, that not only looks good but is uber practical.

Ethical Production? Responsible production is important to them. They have sought to build long lasting relationships with factories who share their concern for human rights and the environment. Plus, they’re transparent in where they produce. You can see photos of their factories on their website.

Sustainability? Boob specifically choose to use sustainable materials: organic cotton, recycled wool, lyocell and recycled polyamide, to mention a few. Boob’s ethos is to make clothes for the future. So, all their maternity clothes are breastfeeding friendly and are made from high quality materials so they can be passed down.

This black ribbed knitted dress has a handy flap for breastfeeding; you can continue wearing it postpartum. Though I’ve worn it bare legged, it could also be worn with tights when it gets really cold. Equally the waffle knit jumper has side splits secured by a button for easy nursing. The idea of longevity of wear dictates all they do.

There’s also plenty of stretch in their clothes, essential when your bump is growing daily. I have lived in their organic cotton leopard print maternity leggings that are just so comfortable.

Clary and Peg

Beautiful, vintage inspired ethical maternity clothes are what define Clary & Peg. They are a brand I’ve loved and worn for years, whether pregnant or not. All their clothes are designed to be worn with or without a bump, when pregnant or breast feeding. (To see me in previous Clary & Peg garments click here and here.)

Ethical Production? All Clary & Peg’s clothes are ethically made here in London. For more information about the factory they use please click here.

Sustainability? They use a mixture of fabrics; from organic corduroy through to deadstock that would otherwise have gone to landfill.

I couldn’t resist this navy organic corduroy boilersuit. It’s stylish, on trend and so easy to wear. It comes with a handy waist tie to wear during the early stages of pregnancy or without a bump. But when you’re my size, the tie is superfluous. I’ve teamed it with their floral headband. Now, headbands not only look good, but are really useful for all those days when hair washing is a distant dream.

Frugi

Bright colours and fun designs encapsulate Frugi. They are known best for their childrenswear, but Frugi also have a small ethical maternity clothes section too.

Ethical Production? Frugi is a brand which takes making ethical and sustainable clothing seriously and wants to be ethical, honest and transparent in all they do. They have sought to build long standing relationships with their suppliers and have developed their own code of conduct which goes above and beyond what is legally required.

Sustainability? Most of their clothing is made from 100% organic cotton. To read why I think organic cotton is always the best choice please click here. They also believe in reducing, reusing and recycling, and their winter jackets are made from 36 recycled plastic drinking bottles.

Now this rainbow maternity jumper brightens my day. Made from 100% organic cotton, it is not only is sustainable, but colourful too. It also has a handy split back making the jumper breastfeeding friendly and designed to be worn beyond birth. In fact, I have a friend who still wears her Frugi jumper in this shape and her son is now 4! Frugi sell this same shape in navy with rainbow stars, which is also a tempting purchase.

JoJo Mamam Bébé

Without a doubt, JoJo Maman Bébé are my surprise brand in this ethical maternity clothes line up. I’ve always known them to be a brand who produce high quality clothes that last. But I didn’t know that they were B Corp certified.

Ethical Production? Being B Corp Certifed means that they are legally required to think about the impact of their actions on their workers, the environment and consumers. They’re a business that put people and planet above profit and use business as a force for good.

“JoJo Maman Bébé are my surprise brand in this ethical maternity clothes line up.

Sustainabilty? JoJo Maman Bébé seek to preserve the planet for future generations. They do this in a whole number of ways: from using sea freight instead of air to making clothes from recycled materials. Their polar fleece is made from waste clothing and bottles and their splash proof bibs from recycled materials. Each Mother’s day they also encourage customers to collect and pack up unwanted baby clothes. They then sort and hand out theses clothes to charities within the UK & Ireland.

JoJo Maman Bébé have a really good selection of maternity coats. I opted for this herringbone oversized one as I thought it would go with everything. But I also loved the version they have in yellow. Their long line jumpers are just right for pregnancy; warm without being bulky and long enough to accommodate a growing bump. Plus the fine knit makes them a flattering shape.

Also, their denim really does stand the test of time. Though these slim fit jeans are new, I’ve worn their dungarees through x 2 pregnancies and they’ve also served my sister and friends throughout their pregnancies too.

Tiffany Rose

Tiffany Rose is a brand loved by celebrities and glamorous ladies alike. They are the place to go if you need an occasion dress whilst pregnant. Tiffany Rose sell everything from full length dresses and casual day dresses to smart coats and bridal gowns.

Ethical Production? All their garments are proudly made here in the UK, from manufacturers who invest in their staff, offering excellent working conditions and being socially responsible.

“Tiffany Rose’s dress shapes are really flattering on a pregnant figure

Sustainabilty? Production in the UK has the added advantage of reduced transportation costs, and so a smaller carbon footprint.  A focus on small production runs means they eliminate the issue of deadstock. And they also produce high quality clothes to last.

Outfit details: floral dress £99 Tiffany Rose | boots Clarks (last year)

Tiffany Rose’s dress shapes are really flattering on a pregnant figure. They have been designed to show off bumps in all their glory. But they’ve also thought about the practical implications of pregnancy, like the fact that you have to wear a supersized maternity bra. I love the feminine deep V on this Midnight Garden dress, but am thankful my bra doesn’t pop out at the top. They have dresses purely for maternity wear and also those suitable for nursing. Their Naomi nursing dress has a secret flap that comes loose when you undo the tie bow. It comes in different colours and I’ll be wearing mine on Christmas Day this year.

Disclosure: All garments were gifted to me for review, but this is not a sponsored post. I hand picked each brand and requested to work with them.
