Who Gives A Crap | Wiping Away Poverty

“Mummy, girls poo but boys do really smelly poos” announced Daisy, my 3 year old, with a big grin on her face. You see toilet humour never fails to amuse, whether you’re 3 or 73. But for the 2.3 billion people worldwide who don’t have access to a toilet, it’s not such a joke. However Who Gives A Crap, the sustainable and eco-friendly toilet paper company, are on a mission to change this. Oh, and they’re doing it with a good dollop of humour, plenty of puns and some great design thrown in.

Let’s build toilets

Who Gives as Crap are a brand that sell seriously cool toilet paper. It’s the type of toilet paper any interior lover would happily have on display in their bathroom. But it doesn’t stop there, they believe that “toilet paper is about more than just wiping bums.” For with every roll of toilet paper bought, 50% of the profits goes to help build toilets. And to date, Who Gives a Crap have donated £650,000 to non-profit organisations who are working to improve access to hygiene, water and basic sanitation in developing countries. Bottoms up!

“Toilet paper is about more than just wiping bums”

Plus they’re not afraid to tell you what they’re doing with the other 50% of profits. Namely reinvesting them into the company to make better products, grow the business and help build more toilets. For did you know, more people in the world own mobile phones than have a toilet?

Eco-friendly toilet paper?

You see not only are Who Gives a Crap wiping away poverty (sorry!), but they also love our world. Currently toilet paper is responsible for destroying 27,000 trees a day. So just think what impact we could make if we all switched to recycled toilet paper. Who Gives A Crap sell 100% recycled toilet paper and, their premium super soft bamboo paper.

So how does it come packaged?

For those of you who are following me on Instagram, you may know that I’ve taken up the challenge of trying to live a Plastic Free July. I won’t lie to you, there will be many areas I fail in. But one really easy change to make is buy using zero waste toilet paper. Supermarket toilet paper comes wrapped in horrible thin plastic packaging that will go straight into landfill. However, Who Gives A Crap’s rolls comes wrapped in uber cool paper packaging, in a cardboard box. All Who Gives A Crap’s packaging can be recycled, composted or put in Daisy’s craft box. Yes it truly is zero waste toilet paper. Fun zero waste toilet paper packaging from Who Gives A CrapZero Waste Packaging of Who Gives A Crap Eco-friendly Toilet Paper

So what’s the zero waste toilet paper like?

There are some things in life where it’s a false economy to buy cheap, and toilet paper is one of those. Yes I’m a toilet paper snob, but you’ll be glad to hear Who Gives A Crap’s recycled toilet paper passes the bottom test. It’s soft, absorbant, triple ply and doesn’t use any dyes, synthetics or fragrances in it’s production. Basically it’s kind to your bottom.

The maths | let’s get to the bottom of this

So Who Gives a Crap’s toilet paper is soft, eco-friendly and people friendly, but is it affordable? Because let’s be honest, toilet paper is not something you can scrimp on. But don’t worry I’ve done the maths for you. Sainsbury’s recycled toilet paper costs 17p/100 sheets for 9 rolls, and it is 2ply. Waitrose’s toilet tissue costs 18.3p/100 sheets for 9 rolls and they don’t declare the ply online. Now, Who Gives a Crap’s 3 ply recycled toilet paper costs from 18.8p/100 sheets. But for that marginal extra cost you can cheer up your bathroom and look after both people and planet. It’s a small price to pay.

Oh and there is a way to make it seriously cheaper. The price above is based based on buying 24 rolls. Which sounds a lot. But the joy of not having to do late night runs to the corner shop for toilet paper, totally outweighs having rolls in your loft. However, if you have space for 240 rolls (!!) then you can buy it for as little as 13.5p/100 sheets. Bargain, but then how would you carry it home?
